Smle Parker Hale Sight
I found a new in the box South African (U/arrow) ownership marked P-H 5a aperture sight Saturday and got around to installing it on one of my #2 MK IV.22s this morning. It shoots good as it is but I'm hoping the new sight will really make it shine. I hope to get it to my range in the morning. It installed without a hitch. The sight replaces the 'dumbell' safety spring, spring fixing screw, rear TG screw, and the safety disk is replaced with a coil spring.
Oct 22, 2013 I found a new in the box South African (U/arrow) ownership marked P-H 5a aperture sight Saturday and got around to installing it on one of my #2 MK IV.22s this morning. It shoots good as it is but I'm hoping the new sight will really make it shine. I hope to get it to my range in the morning. It installed without a hitch. This was the case several years ago, but by using a knowledge of the correct reading of the vernier windgauge on Parker-Hale sights, by correctly 'zeroing' the sight for rifle errors in the lateral plane, and with the aid of the Parker-Hale 'Windicator' incorporated in the cover of their score book, or by memorising the factors of the Parker.
The good thing is nothing had to be permantly altered and all the bits I took off are safely stored in the P-H box.I've seen pics of Australian #2s set-up in the same manner with P-H 5a sights for their classic matches. View QuoteIt's my secret honey-hole. There is still more (mostly P-H sights for #4s and even a Cooley) to get as I collect the funds to buy them but I got them squirreled away. Sadly I'm not made of money.
I try to buy a couple of the same type so I can sell one to pay for the other.I also picked-up another P-14 P-H 5b, it's a older Bisley Works and well used but in good working order with no backlash.A CLLE rear sight in a old Peddie-Parker LLE sight box.I also found a Battalion Armorer's SMLE combo tool.
Here we have a fairly scarce one - A Parker Hale Rear Target Sight Model Plus 5 with a mounting plate for a Long Lee which will also fit the Lee Enfield SMLE rifles. Please take a look at the sight just after this one:.uk/PHServicesightsMain.htm as it will explain this sight a heck of a lot better than I can. According to that excellent site, these are circa 1939 and are for the Long Lee (CLLE) and also the SMLE, and were quite advanced with multiple advantages over the standard sights. These are wonderful sights from a mechanical point of view. The entire sight folds forward to lie along the side of the rifle, out of the way and allows you to use the standard service sights. Once raised, the windage bar flips down, and then can be adjusted for windage. The elevation bar also adjusts. All of these bars can be locked in place by tightening the locking knobs visible in the photos.
Some screws a little burred as always, but nothing critical. One dumbell spring looks replaced, but works fine. You have to examine one of these to understand how ahead of their time they were. Flip it up and backwards, and then down to the right hand side, and you are ready for accurate shooting. This one is dirty, and would benefit from a clean. A soaking in some diesel will do wonders for some of the dirt. It does function very well though, and most of the tarnish is surface and not pitting or major rust.
I don't have time to service this one or clean it, so am letting it go at whatever eBay decides it is worth. The dials and locking nuts function smoothly, everything works as it should and I have included a nice 6 position PH59 eyepiece that is fetching over $50 on its own nowdays. No mounting screws are included.Summary: The link above shows how the sight folds both forwards and sideways.
Markings on this one are AGP, S.M.L.E. And Parker's +5. It is dirty, with surface tarnishing and light rust in places. It would really benefit from a clean and some cosmetic TLC. But the dials are smooth.
In fact, smoother than a lot of my more modern sights such as the 5C and 5A. This is a nice collectible sight that is not seen often for sale. Please note that the winning bidder has 3 days to make payment unless arranged otherwise.
