Sometimes My Keyboard Stops Working

Quick Fix Windows 8 – Windows 10 – Keyboard stopped working. All of a sudden my keyboard stopped working. Everything else worked fine, but typing just wasn’t happening. EDIT: One of the comments mentioned that Windows Key + Spacebar should be the quick fix for this problem. So try this, before reading further. While on the web site before this, my keyboard did not work as it has not all day. It just started functioning. Sometimes I reboot and it works and sometimes, like now, it just begins on its own. I have wasted up to 4 hours rebooting, reloading the driver from the install CD. What can I do? It does not always begin to function after I reboot.

This might be catalogued as random stupidity from my part, but Binging for it didn’t really bring me to the information so here goes. I’m currently working on a 3 year old laptop that has been travelling with me pretty much around the world. 16GB, Core i7, 2xSSD, it never lets me down. Yesterday while I just stepped off the plane and arrived at the customer, booted my pc and cleaned up the inbox something strange happened. All of a sudden my keyboard stopped working.

Everything else worked fine, but typing just wasn’t happening.EDIT: One of the comments mentioned that Windows Key + Spacebar should be the quick fix for this problem. So try this, before reading further. As any highly trained IT professional I of course resorted to the one and only possible solution to fix this: hitting every key on the keyboard, with the same “schwung” as professional piano players go from the low note to the high note. And to my surprise at times there was a key popping up. So maybe it wasn’t the keyboard. Again, I am a highly trained professional, so solution number two: reboot. In all honesty, this would be the first time that I actually had to reboot Windows 8 to get something to work again.

Reboot, the bitlocker unlock window comes up, I type in my code and the keyboard works fine. Problem solved. Logged in to windows, and the same problem comes up again. No worries, I am still a highly trained professional so I open OneNote and after my piano move I resorted to option three. Push it until it works. I just pressed a key for a long time and to my surprise the character appeared. So I went to the keyboard settings for the repeat speed, but changing that did not resolve it.

There was only one thing I could still think about. Ease of Access settings. And there it was: The filter keys were enabled. I don’t know how I did it, as the settings were still set to show a warning when the Filter Keys are enabled, but for some reason I did not see the warning or I pressed Enter when it came up without realizing it.So when you are in the situation of your keyboard no longer working in Windows 8, press a key for a long time and see if it comes up.

If it does, that it is probably the filter keys. To go to the settings, press windows key for a long time (filter keys is on) till you get the metro menu if you aren’t there yet, press f for a long time, press i for a long time (you get what the other actions are) until you have put in Filter Keys in your search window.

Click on Settings, Ignore Repeated Key Strokes using Filter Keys and untick Turn on Filter Keys. Thanks a million. I was trying to change the repeat speed as well and found out the keys were actually working. I also knew because the wireless key with the light was working. I looked up the keyboard settings and saw the options. I am not a pro so I thought everything selected was normal! Thanks to you I am able to type THIS much faster than having to use the touch keypad!

I am sooo relieved! Still wondering how it changed though. I always hook up my laptop to hdmi so I am wondering if that had to do with it somehow. Could have been my 18 month old. EhThanks a lot! And God bless you! I know I am posting quite late, but I thought I might explain how this happened to you.

Much like sticky keys, filter keys has a shortcut on the keyboard for quick access (Though just like sticky keys, very few actually want this feature) and that is to hold the right shift down for 8 seconds. This may have happened when you were carrying the laptop to a different room whilst it was still open? Or maybe you fell asleep on your keyboard? Or even just leaned on it whilst using it. You can disable this by going to ease of access in your control panel, and clicking 'Set up filter keys' and unticking the box labelled 'Turn on Filter Keys when right SHIFT is pressed for 8 seconds'I hope this helps you avoid activating this again. Bless you sir!

Dell support has been trying to fix my keyboard issue for 3 weeks on my new XPS 8700 PC. They have reinstalled the OS system 5 times. Then they sent a technician to my house to replace the motherboard, hard drive and key board. Same problem. Then they took over my computer and reinstalled the OS 2 more times.

Nothing worked. They downloaded new drivers 3 times. Still nothing. Now they won't answer my emails or phone calls.

Best Buy refuses to take the computer back because i'm past 15 days. I made an appointment with a local computer shop to remove 8.1 OS and install win 7 for this afternoon. Then I read your post Five minutes later my keyboard and computer are working perfectly. Thank you so much!!!!!!! Thanks a ton koen, I bought Sony vaio flip and didn't use it for 4 months because of the keyboard problem. When I took to the Sony service center they said better to downgrade to windows 7 they cannot solve this as there are many such issues with windows 8. I had installed and uninstalled and upgraded to 8.1 to n number of times without any success.

Dear Koen,There should be an international annual award for the most helpful IT fix blog post. If there was I would vote for 'Windows 8 – Keyboard stopped working'.!I bought a HP touchscreen all-in-one computer for my 78 year old mother. She had giving up on Windows 8 and lost all her confidence to use the new computer because she could no longer type on the keyboard.

I spent over 5 hours trying to fix this problem until I found your blog site. I cannot believe this problem is not highlighted on major websites such as microsoft, dell or hp. Well written, humorous and simple to use instructions too.Regards,Will, Ireland. Your description of what happened to your PC saved my bacon.

To give all of you a readers digest version of my events here we go. There are some really evil and destructive virus and a variety of computer STD's. I don't even hit the porn sites really!!

I am a musician, composer, guild repair and very soon a guitar builder and consultant to various well of rabid guitar collectors. Well as I peruse the Interweb looking for new gear for my client's I picked up one nasty Trojan Horse virus that delude my virus software slowly rewrote a bunch of setting including system restore. I have been chance that nasty bug and as a last ditch effort to avoid being squashed it disabled my keyboard by turning on the filter key setting and turning on the narrator. You deserve a star on&in the Mayday Walk of Fame as well as in the SOS Hall of IT Fame. Millions of thanks. I caught this stupid problem in the middle of testing latest Win 10 Preview (called since today Insider Preview 🙂 and, after hours of trials and errors I decided to completely rebuild my computer. Immediately afterwards I found this and it saved my weekend!

BTW I used as a work-around the On-Screen Keyboard as the tool of last resort in order to get at least a primitive typing surrogate when trying to debug.Robert Soran. You literally saved my college courses.

I talked with all the supposed 'experts' from HP to MS and none of them came up with this fix. I was told that the hardware in my keyboard was broken so it would need repairing (10-14days).

I am taking online college classes and thought I would probably fail or have to find $1,000 for new laptop, BUT after reading your instructions and following them exactly, my pc/keyboard was fixed in less than 2 minutes! Thank you so much for sharing your solution! Thank you so much. I have been at my wits end.

My tablet keyboard stopped working once I installed 10 on desktop. Weird I know.

Sometimes My Wireless Keyboard Stops Working

In May of this year i went on holidays for four months. Removed the battery from Asus R500A laptop and yesterday when I got back from holiday I reinstalled the battery and the keyboard was not working. I can't log on to the laptop, nor can I see anything when I press ease of access button. Tried to use an USB keyboard with no luck, it is not working. When I try to type the password only few keys are working.

Also tried to hold down some keys for long time and nothing is happening. Any suggestions? I am thanking you in advance for any help. Thank you SO much! I just went through 2 months of issues with my DELL for keyboard that wouldn't work; sent it in twice after hours on the phone with Tech Support; had two Techs to house. Finally, I got a swap and had a keyboard problem within 2 days.

Tech advised to turn off Sticky Keys. Worked fine until loading Windows 10. Same problem, keyboard wouldn't work! I unticked the Sticky Keys as before, but nothing.

I tried a number of other things in Ease of Access. I just hated to start all over! Decided to do search on this subject. Found this and tried it. I now happily typing way!!! I can't thank you enough!!!! My toshiba satellite s75 was fresh out the box.

I thought it was a windows 10 pro glitch. Worked for a bit and then was in and out i knew something was off when the keys worked to type in my pin at login but not after windows launched. I had checked all updates, installed windows 10 pro, checked drivers (uninstalled), Finally phoned it in.funny thing is, Costco concierge 'tech' support had me wipe it and start from scratch after doing all the same troubleshooting steps I explained I had already tried. Hope others can find your post first.

Most of those menu instructions weren’t helpful because my Control Panel menu and Windows menu are labeled abit differentso, I reached around behind her and pulled the keyboard plug from the keyboard port, reinserted it. No more WINLOCK. I have 4 cats.

My wife’s rescues. Can’t even begin to regale the many events my system was reconfigured while I was asleep or away. Lost my entire file history backup once. Crashed my backup 3TB hard drive. On another occasion removed Account Manager permissions for half of Windows. ALL my apps,(GONE), they were in the system folder, couldn’t see them. So, I prop my keyboard up vertically to keep Alabama (Roll Tide!) and Tennessee (I depend on the kindness of strangers to help when I’m in need) to stay off my keyboard when they insist on lounging and partying on my PC station.

Needless to say I don’t use a mouse. LOGITECH Wireless Trackball. Unfair advantage when multiplayer gaming online. To keep the cats from trying to kill the moving pointer onscreen I had to install an anti-kitty computer screen security device: A 35 gallon aquarium with multiple bubble wands and 25+/- Neon Tetra and a few Chinese Algae-Eaters.
